New Procedure: Mr. Crossen will break you up into SIX groups, and each group will be assigned TWO of the topics below from the Chapters 6 and 7 content. You need to be prepared to work in ANY TWO of these for your group to its job. You will have approximately 30 minutes to discuss and prepare your presentations. Remaining time will consist of groups presenting their consensus to the rest of the class and responding to questions. Each group will have approximately 8 minutes (three minutes of presentation and one minute of questions for each topic).
Describe the nature of Bedouin society before Muhammad received his revelations, and identify how Islam addressed the fundamental problems in Arabian society.
Trace the succession dispute over the office of the caliph, and assess how disputes over authority after Muhammad's death served to hinder future Muslim unity.
Describe the Umayyad Empire.
Trace the events that led to the fall of the Umayyads, and compare the Abbasid Empire with the Umayyad Empire.
Identify the achievements of the Arab phase of Islamic development ending in 750 C.E.

Trace the stages of Islamic incursion into India & southeast Asia, & compare them to the initial spread of Islam throughout the Mediterranean & the Middle East. To what extent were Muslims successful in converting Indians to Islam? Assess elements of success and failure.
Describe the political, cultural, and economic characteristics of the Abbasid Empire.
